Ashley Cole turned down a last day move to Newcastle United according to the Italian press this Wednesday morning.
Gazzetta dello Sport claim that Newcastle made an approach to take the former England international on the Premier League’s transfer deadline day.
Despite being frozen out at AS Roma, the Italian sports newspaper say that the full-back knocked back the chance of a Premier League return and a move to Tyneside.
Ashley Cole has been assigned the squad number 0 on the AS Roma official website, with the player not included in both their Serie A squad and the Champions League one.
The former Chelsea player only made 11 Serie A appearances last season for AS Roma, the last being on 8 March 2015, with only three of those matches coming after November 2014.
If you give the claims in the Italian media any credibility then at a push you could link it with the reports on Tuesday that suggested Crystal Palace were interested in talking Paul Dummett from Newcastle.
Left-back is arguably the weakest position for United, with a perception amongst many fans that Haidara is decent getting forward but suspect in defence.
Whilst Paul Dummett is better defensively but too slow to play full-back, having looked a much better centre-back when getting his chance there.
Ashley Cole turns 35 in December and it would have been a massive surprise to see Mike Ashley entertain the idea, whilst Cole was dropped in Rome after showing a lack of form and reportedly losing the turn of pace that was a big part of his game.
