In a top ten of English football’s greatest ever managers, there is no room for Sir Bobby Robson.

That is bad enough but then when you consider that Sam Allardyce, Neil Warnock and Tony Pulis HAVE been included, you do really have to wonder…

The top ten was put together by former top referee Keith Hackett.

No problems with the top six (see below) but you have to say that Hackett loses the plot after that.

Here is Keith Hackett’s top 10 greatest managers in English football history, followed by what he had to say about Sam Allardyce and Neil Warnock

(1) Alex Ferguson

(2) Brian Clough

(3) Arsene Wenger

(4) Bill Shankly

(5) Bob Paisley

(6) Jose Mourinho

(7) Sam Allardyce

(8) Neil Warnock

(9) Garry Monk

(10) Tony Pulis

Sam Allardyce

‘He’s an outstanding manager and I think his record proves it. He’s a great English manager, albeit he’s out of the game at the moment but with his quality and being an Englishman I hope he gets back into it.

Allardyce has never been given the opportunity of officiating a big club, I think we’d all be surprised at the quality that he could produce.’

Neil Warnock

‘Neil is someone again who is more thoughtful about the game than we take on board.

I think very few people are aware that he is actually a qualified referee. The outcome of that is that he has a very good understanding and raw knowledge, and also the ability to apply it. I think that adds to his overall credibility.

He’s very passionate and that’s to his great credit.’
