A dream debut for Georginio Wijnaldum, with the Dutch midfielder showcasing his talents and the only disappointment that United conceded a late equaliser.

Making his name as a goalscoring midfielder in both the Dutch League and international football for Holland, could Wijnaldum make the step up to the Premier League?

In emphatic style he answered that with a stylish second half header (watch it HERE) that oozed class, capping a great first competitive match in front of the Newcastle fans.

The former PSV player wasn’t disappointed either with the atmosphere he’d heard so much about, saying that as soon as the ball hit the back of the net he wanted to celebrate the moment with the supporters.

As well as helping Newcastle to improve and win more games, Wijnaldum has the personal aim of simply wanting to show the people of Newcastle how good he can play football.

Against Southampton we saw glimpses of what he can do and the great thing is he can only get better as he gets fully up to speed with the Premier League and his new team.

A great signing and shows the difference when you invest in quality rather than hoping budget buys will come good.

Georginio Wijnaldum talking to Sky:

“I enjoyed it very much because I was really looking forward to it, I had heard a lot about the atmosphere and today I saw it with my own eyes. I like it.

“It is harder than the Dutch League but I like it (Premier League football) also.

“I wanted to celebrate the goal with the fans, I think it is great if you can score on your debut – but sad we didn’t win the game.”

Personal aims for the season:

“I want to play good games, I want to score goals, to show how good I am. As a team to win a lot of games and to rank higher than we did last year.

“I want to show the people (of Newcastle) how good I can play football.”
