Steve McClaren returned to Old Trafford, gave Manchester United the due respect, then almost ‘nicked it’.
After the first 20 minutes Newcastle were comfortable as they settle down and players realised they were supposed to be doing specific jobs…
After the game McClaren talked of how much ‘belief’ mattered whilst at the same time admitting that there are areas that need to be improved upon.
Steve McClaren talking to the BBC:
“It is always difficult here, you alway look here to come and have a go and give a performance. Once we got through the first 20 minutes/half an hour, they needed to score.
“At half-time we felt we were growing into the game and we grew that much we could have nicked it in the end.”
“Excellent defending, great spirit, that is what you need to come here and get a result and we have done that.
“You need luck, we had had work, we had blocks, we had saves – but clean sheets are important and it was important for the (Newcastle) supporters in the corner.”
“If we had a bit more belief and bit better on the ball, better decisions, we should have scored today.
“We are far from where we want to be and there are lots of areas we need to improve upon, but if they have got that spirit and togetherness – work hard for their luck, we will grow and get better.”
