It is more revolution than evolution as Steve McClaren announces his team and bench to face Southampton today.

The starting eleven are a very mixed bag, with I guess the vast majority of fans pleased/relieved to see Coloccini, Wijnaldum and Mbemba all start, whilst disappointment that the likes of Anita and Obertan still make the side.

There are a massive nine changes in the 18 man squad today, compared to John Carver’s selection only 77 days ago.

Four changes in the starting eleven and five on the bench.

Today’s team just announced:

Krul, Janmaat, Mbemba, Coloccini, Haidara, Anita, Colback, Sissoko, Wijnaldum, Obertan, Cisse

On the bench:

Darlow, Taylor, Aarons, de Jong, Perez, Tiote, Mitrovic

Against West Ham in United’s last competitive match, these were the 18 on duty:

Team: Krul, Janmaat, Williamson, Coloccini, Dummett, Colback, Gutierrez, Anita (Gouffran 89), Sissoko, Riviere, Cisse

Unused Subs: Woodman, Ameobi, Cabella, Ryan Taylor, de Jong, Perez

Transfers and injuries have obviously played a part but Steve McClaren has made some bold moves.

Coloccini hasn’t played a single minute in the friendlies, whilst new partner Chancel Mbemba only has 28 minutes to his name and has had little over a week to train with his new teammates.

In contrast, only Sissoko played more than Mike Williamson’s 405 minutes in the friendlies and yet the defender doesn’t even make the squad!

Surprise for many that Gabriel Obertan is included and when he was named in the predicted line-up on The Mag we got plenty stick!

I’m guessing this is at least a little bit of a ‘crowd pleaser’ selection by Steve McClaren to try and get the fans onside straight away.

The United boss surely wishing he’d had far more time to try out his defence in pre season.

Great to see so many options on the bench and that definitely looks to me as though McClaren is saying ‘Look at the options we have got in depth’, as I’m guessing he’d rather not risk somebody like Cheick Tiote with so little preparation.

The scene is set, go to it boys.

Interesting as well to compare Steve McClaren’s team to the one the fans voted for, which you can see HERE.
