At his press conference in the lead up to the match at Manchester United, Steve McClaren was asked a bit of a strange question regarding Aleksandar Mitrovic.
After two yellow cards in two brief substitute appearances, Mitrovic has been talked about more for that by the media than what he might bring to the team.
The forward arrives with a record of 21 yellow cards and 2 red in only two seasons at Anderlecht.
One of the journalists quizzing the United Head Coach asked:
‘Is Mitrovic aggressive away from the pitch as well?’
Steve McClaren didn’t bother answer the daft question directly but made clear what he believes that the Serbian striker can do for Newcastle United, saying that Mitrovic is a winner and he won’t want stop the striker showing his physical side and will instead encourage it – in the right way.
The Newcastle boss insisting that Chancel Mbemba and Florian Thauvin have been brought in because they are the same type of characters – winners.
“He (Mitrovic) is a winner, he’s a winner and we love that. You see Mbemba, they are winners.
“OK, players at the top and players who are winners, that extra edge, I have heard that also about Thauvin coming in.
“We are bringing in players with character and who are winners.
“And Mitrovic…that is what he demonstrates on the field, he wants to win, he wants to score and he wants to be physical and we don’t stop that – we encourage that. But it has to be controlled because otherwise we get punished like we did last week (Swansea).”
