Player turned pundit Paul Merson has made his prediction for the Swansea v Newcastle clash this weekend.

Despite Newcastle’s encouraging display against Southampton, Merson thinks it will be a comfortable victory for the Welsh club.

He says he rates Steve McClaren but that Swansea’s performance and result at Stamford Bridge last weekend, marks them as the most likely winners.

The one-time Arsenal player picks out former Newcastle target Bafetimbi Gomis as a ‘real handful’, the striker now first choice after Wilfried Bony defected to Manchester City earlier this year.

Paul Merson does though predict steady progression for United throughout this season, which sounds at least a bit more promising than last season.

With United’s tough start to the season, a point or better would be a massive boost with Manchester United and Arsenal up next.

Last season Newcastle gained a solitary point from these four fixtures, that coming in the 2-2 draw at the Liberty Stadium thanks to Papiss Cisse’s two goals.

With a point already gained against Southampton, hopefully the players can build on that.

However, having already conceded two goals from headers in 90 minutes, Mbemba and Coloccini will have to pay close attention to Bafetimbi Gomis.

Predicting a 2-0 home win, Paul Merson had this to say when speaking to Sky Sports:

“Swansea were very good at Chelsea, and Bafetimbi Gomis is a real handful. Yes, Courtois was sent off but you have to give Swansea so much credit.

“I like McClaren, he’s a good coach and will make the players better. It will be steady progression for them this season, but this one is Swansea’s all over.”
