Newcastle v Southampton

Sunday 9 August 1.30pm

Once again Newcastle fans have had to wait whilst most of their Premier League competitors have already launched their seasons.

After having to also wait for significant transfer activity, there have finally been four new players added before the kick-off.

Ivan Toney has instantly gone into the Under 21s team and lost his first match 3-1 at Wolves on Saturday, so we can rule him out of playing today.

Georginio Wijnaldum looks a certain starter but it looks in the balance for Mitrovic and Wijnaldum, with the extended time to get them over the line and work visas approved, it has meant a minimum of pre-season for the pair.

It is ironic that there is every chance that Newcastle’s bench could include the likes of Aarons, de Jong, Perez, Mitrovic and Mbemba, whilst on paper we’ll have weaker players on the pitch.

Late signings and injuries have meant more problems for Steve McClaren when preparing for today, whilst players such as de Jong and Aarons need to be managed properly after injury nightmares.

It might not be the finished product our there today at St James Park but there should be enough to do the fans justice.

Whether it is enough though to beat Southampton is another matter.

The visitors’ 5-0 Europa League aggregate win over Vitesse Arnhem is a reminder of the strength and confidence they possess going into the season.

Last season we saw United go down 4-0 and 2-1 to the Saints and I think a draw would represent a decent return today.

I just hope though that whatever the eventual result, McClaren puts a team out that goes and tries to score the first goal rather than sit back and wait to concede as we saw so often under Pardew and Carver.

A new Head Coach, new players, a new start and fngers crossed a new strategy to win matches.
