I think it is safe to say that most fans have been encouraged by aspects of the Newcastle United performances so far, though disappointed with the results.

Yes we have had a difficult four game run of opponents to start the season but you can’t be happy to have only 2 points and be keeping the mackems company in the bottom three.

There’s also no guarantee that the corner will be turned any time soon, with a 16 day wait and then away to West Ham, who just stuffed Liverpool 3-0 at Anfield..

Plus of course the main scoring hope for this season, Aleksandar Mitrovic, is now missing the next three, starting with Upton Park.

However, on the up side, we have seen promising signs from all four major signings, plus established players such as Krul, Coloccini, Taylor and Sissoko looking as though we might get better from them this season.

Have a look at these last three Premier League matches and what do the stats (from BBC Sport) tell you? (NUFC figures first each time)

Swansea v Newcastle

Possession 34%/66% Shots 4/19 Shots on target 2/6

Man Utd v Newcastle United

Possession 31%/69% Shots 7/20 Shots on target 0/8

Newcastle v Arsenal

Possession 26%/74% Shots 1/22 Shots on target 0/9

That is three matches which average out at Possession 30%

Total Shots in the 3 games 12/61

Total Shots on target in the 3 games 2/23

Yes Newcastle have had a man sent off against both Swansea and Arsenal but if anything United actually did better in both matches after going down to 10 men.

Arsenal were totally dominant in that opening period whilst Swansea ran rings around Newcastle and were one up before Janmaat got his marching orders.

I think the team has got a lot more potential than last season but I do worry that a lot of people (hopefully just those outside the club) have a belief that in time the results will automatically come.

Just because we have odd bits of decent play, or a player showing his ability in snatches, doesn’t necessarily translate to winning matches.

I think the team has to all step up together and raise their games, collectively there has to be more of a goal threat and end product.

Promising signs only take you so far and we will all breathe easier once the players attach victories to the potential glimpses of better times ahead.
