It must be one of the best used quotes to do with Newcastle United, Sir Bobby Robson summing up what supporting the club is really all about.
So when the club were putting together a video to get supporters in the mood for the clash with Arsenal on Saturday, what better way than to use those classic words from the great man to get people up for it.
The video is a few minutes long and is another example of the improved output from the club in terms of social media and other interaction with the fans.
There are crowd scenes and moody shots of St James Park, plus great goals scored by players past and present: Shearer, Albert, Beardsley, Sissoko, Perez, Cisse….
Having said all the above, the club shot themselves in the foot by ‘forgetting’ to include a part of Sir Bobby Robson’s quote – see if you can spot the difference.
The full quote and then a screenshot from the video below showing the doctored version – can’t imagine why they happened to cut those particular words out…
‘What is a club in any case?
Not the buildings or the directors or the people who are paid to represent it. It’s not the television contracts, get-out clauses, marketing departments or executive boxes.
It’s the noise, the passion, the feeling of belonging, the pride in your city.
It’s a small boy clambering up stadium steps for the very first time, gripping his father’s hand, gawping at that hallowed stretch of turf beneath him and, without being able to do a thing about it, falling in love.’
Bit of a shame because when the author, George Caulkin, who ghost-wrote Sir Bobby Robson’s book, pointed out to Newcastle United that they’d ‘missed a bit’, the club took down the video from their Twitter timeline.
However, you should still be able to see the video if you go HERE (Thanks to Mag reader Kev Race for sending us this link)
