Newcastle loan player named number one

Freddie Woodman has been named number one for Crawley Town as they head into the new season.

The League Two side have handed out the squad numbers and the on-loan 18 year old Newcastle United goalkeeper has been confirmed in top spot.

Crawley also signed another keeper this summer but on a permanent deal – Birmingham City’s Callum Preston, he has been given the number 12 shirt.

Last week saw another out on loan Newcastle player, Adam Armstrong, get the confidence booster of the number nine shirt at Coventry City.

It certainly appears that United have learnt from past mistakes.

Previously, a number of young players have gone out on loan and ended up getting very little game time, with both Newcastle and the player wasting their time.

Adam  Campbell was one, whilst Callum Roberts went to Gateshead last season and Newcastle ended up recalling him early because the Heed wanted to play him in their reserve team!

It looks though that with the likes of Armstrong and Woodman that Newcastle have demanded assurances that barring (playing) disaster, the players are intended to be first team regulars at their on-loan clubs.

Both players have signed initial deals which will keep them at their respective clubs until January.
