I have been increasingly asking myself if Newcastle United have bought a conservatory this summer, when they should have been worrying about a leaking roof.

Watching the friendlies go by, the centre of defence has been the usual joke, with dumb and dumber (Williamson and Taylor) looking like two parts of a pantomime horse that have come apart and haven’t got a clue as to what the other half is doing.

Added to this, Massadio Haidara is no Premier League player, certainly not as a left-back/defender. He often looks the part but is very poor at that quite important thing of stopping the opposition getting beyond you and scoring goals.

Coloccini has never been the same since that 2011/12 season and subsequent trying to jump ship during the relegation struggle that following season.

So with Daryl Janmaat the only reliable defender on the books, we are all left hoping 21 year old Chancel Mbemba can make an instant impression on what has been consistently one of the worst defences in the Premier League for some years.

I’m looking forward to seeing what Wijnaldum and Mitrovic can do, but that doesn’t stop me thinking, if this is the transfer spending done for this window – would Newcastle not have been better off bringing in another centre-back and left-back instead of one of those two headline signings.

Hopefully both with prove major assets, and we do need extra creativity/goals, but that could all be undermined by not fixing that hole in the roof (the defence).

Newcastle only kept eight clean sheets last season and I can’t see any major change in that by only signing Mbemba, so what that then means is realistically you have to score at least twice to stand a chance of winning almost every week.

When you add the fact that United only managed to score two goals or more on 11 occasions last season then it highlights the problems that had built up at both ends of the pitch.

You have to assume that Wijnaldum and Mitrovic must add goals on the plus (new conservatory) side but just what mess will that leaking roof continue to cause?
