After dabbling with a Tuesday night kick-off against Northampton, Newcastle return to their usual Wednesday night slot for the visit of Sheffield Wednesday in the third round.

The club have confirmed that the Capital One Cup match will be a  7.45pm kick-off on Wednesday 23 September.

United of course beat Northampton Town 4-1 in the second round at St. James Park on Tuesday night, whilst Sheffield Wednesday defeated Oxford United 1-0 to get into last night’s draw.

Even if Newcastle had wanted to play the Owls on the Tuesday night, it is very unlikely Northumbria Police would have allowed it.

Last night’s joint attendances were just over the forty thousand mark at St James Park and the Stadium of Light.

However, the visits of Wednesday and Manchester City will undoubtedly see bigger attendances, as well as more travelling fans for both matches.

Newcastle are at home either side of the third round tie. On the previous Saturday (19 September) it is Watford who visit for a normal 3pm kick-off, whilst Chelsea are at St James Park on Saturday 26 September, the game live on Sky at 5.30pm.
