Newcastle United may have a new boss in Steve McClaren but he has to confront a not so funny joke that has covered the last nine months.

During this period, NUFC have played 15 away matches in all competitions.

Here are the stats:

Played 15

Won 1

Lost 12

Drawn 2

Goals scored 8

Goals conceded 33

The only win in this nine month run was the 3-0 victory at Hull and ironically none of the three goalscorers will feature today at Swansea. Sammy Ameobi is out on loan, Remy Cabella injured and Yoan Gouffran almost certainly out of the match day 18 – as was the case last weekend.

The other five away goals scored in these past nine months came from Perez, Riviere and Cisse (3).

With Ayoze Perez looking nailed on for the bench again and Riviere injured, this afternoon looks pretty sure to see Newcastle have only Papiss Cisse in the team as having scored an away goal for United in this period.

Steve McClaren has to tackle this ongoing problem of not only woeful away form, but also the fact that so many Newcastle players have swerved the responsibility of scoring goals.

Hopefully the promising signs so far when it comes to set-pieces will be continued from pre season, though having said that, against Southampton the delivery was generally woeful with Wijnaldum the chief culprit on dead ball situations, though thankfully in open play he really looked the part.
