Newcastle were reported to have made unsuccessful offers to buy Florian Thauvin when he was at both Bastia & Lille and now LeSport10 in France have claimed an exclusive, with United now said to have offered Marseille 15m euros (Approx £10.6m) for the winger.

Thauvin had an indifferent season and was dropped towards the end of the campaign, starting only one of the final four matches which was against his old club Bastia.

Failing by two points to make the Champions League placings, ensured that Marseille who were already struggling financially would have to offload a number of players. Both to balance the books and to enable them to bring in some new players of their own.

Dimitri Payet has already joined West Ham for 15m euros and earlier today Porto signed midfielder Gianelli Imbula for 22m euros from the French club.

If Florian Thauvin does leave, then anything over the 11m euros they paid Lille two years ago will represent profit on the player.

Le10Sport say that they understand Marseille are keen to sell but with the sale of the other two players already completed for a combined 37m euros (approx £26m), they won’t feel pressured to instantly accept Newcastle or any other club’s offer.

The 22 year old has represented the national team up to Under 21 level and will still retain belief that he could force his way into the French Euro squad for next summer’s tournament which will be held in France.

Whether he will see the Premier League as a better platform than Ligue 1 to achieve that is open to question, especially having seen the likes of Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa and Remy Cabella’s international chances disappear whilst at St James Park.

Newcastle’s Chief Scout is said to be a big fan of Florian Thauvin’s which gives a bit of credibility to Newcastle’s long-term link with the player.

Today the Newcastle board met to discuss transfers, let’s hope talk turns to action very quickly.
