Newcastle linked to Marco van Ginkel transfer

Newcastle United are interested in signing Marco van Ginkel according to reports this morning.

When signing for Chelsea two years ago, Vitesse Arnhem’s manager described him as potentially being the ‘next Frank Lampard’.

The midfielder had helped Vitesse into a fourth pace finish in the league and was given an award as the best young player in Holland at that point.

Like so many players arriving at Stamford Bridge, Marco van Ginkel found it hard to get games and the 20 year old then suffered a cruciate ligament injury to compound matters.

A 6ft 1 box to box player, the Dutchman can play right across the midfield and was a full international at the age of only 19.

Spending last season on loan at AC Milan, Marco van Ginkel made 17 Serie A appearances but had his season restricted with a couple of injuries.

Arriving for a reported £8m at Chelsea as a 20 year old, the Dutch midfielder will be looking for a big season this time around, especially if he hopes to make his way back into international contention.

Newcastle would be able to offer him first team football and with repeated claims that players such as Cheick Tiote will be encouraged to leave United, the arrival of a midfielder capable of scoring goals would be more than welcome, van Ginkel having scored 23 times in his three full seasons playing for Vitesse Arnhem.

United of course already have three Dutch players in Krul, Janmaat and Anita.

There have also been reports earlier this year that Mike Ashley is keen to sign both Dutch and German players to help give Sports Direct a bigger profile in those countries, as his retail empire looks to make further inroads into those lucrative European markets.
