Young Newcastle star Paul Woolston put in another excellent display on Saturday but despite saving a penalty, England bowed out of the Under 17 European Championships to Russia.
Playing for a place in the semi-finals, England missed a penalty and then went one down only a few minutes later when Aleksei Tataev at last beat the United goalkeeper. Only the second goal he’d conceded in four matches at the finals in Bulgaria.
The 16 year old keeper kept English hopes alive when he saved Boris Tsygankov’s second half penalty but it wasn’t to be.
The defeat means that Paul Woolston and his England teammates now have to pick themselves up and beat Spain on Tuesday in a play-off, to try and win a place at the Under 17 World Cup finals which take place in Chile in October later this year.
