Newcastle United have been scouting Lewis Cook with a view to a summer transfer according to reports this morning.

Aston Villa are also reported to have been keeping a close eye on the teenager who has been outstanding for Leeds this season in the Championship.

Making his debut as a substitute in the first league game of the season, the defensive midfielder has since gone from strength to strength and played almost every game, featuring in 38 of Leeds United’s matches this campaign.

However, if he did  happen to move to Tyneside then it’s unlikely he would help out with the major goalscoring problem at Newcastle, Cook has failed to score in any of those 38 games.

Cook only turned 18 in February and despite his youth and diminutive 5ft 7 frame, he has more than held his own in a tough physical division.

The Telegraph report that Newcastle are looking to concentrate on young British talent this summer and see Lewis Cook as a bright prospect.

However, picking up homegrown players isn’t easy and this was proved when Newcastle’s pursuit of Milton Keynes Dons’ Dele Alli was ended by the player deciding to sign instead for Spurs earlier this season.

Leewis Cook has featured for both England’s Under 17s and Under 19s, picking up a winners medal alongside Adam Armstrong when the pair helped England win the Under 17 European Championships last summer in Malta.
