Jonas Gutierrez ‘Newcastle is bigger than this’

Jonas Gutierrez has said that he is ‘proud to be a Geordie’ and he feels really lucky to be back playing football, after thinking he may never play again only a few months ago.

After scoring the second goal that effectively sealed Newcastle United’ safety, Jonas says that the supporters deserve better than a relegation struggle and the club should be top ten.

Summing up the current mess at St.James’ Park, the Argentine winger says that ‘Newcastle is bigger than this’.

Jonas Gutierrez speaking to Sky Sports:

“Since I arrived at Newcastle the fans were fantastic with me and the team. To be honest, they (the fans) don’t deserve to have this problem, this situation, Newcastle is bigger than this.

“You have to look forward, this club has to look forward, the top ten and not looking at the bottom.”

Proud to be a Geordie:

“To be honest, a few months ago I didn’t know if I was going to play football again and now I am back, I’m playing football, I have a second chance in my life.

“I am really proud to be a Geordie and it was fantastic to be here today.”

Having played a central role in such a pivotal game, it is ridiculous if Mike Ashley doesn’t offer Jonas at least a one or two year contract.

Considering just how short the squad is of both numbers and quality, if Jonas Gutierrez was good enough for this relegation decider, surely he is worth a place in next season’s squad ahead of all but a handful of players.
