Jonas Gutierrez might not be the most talented player at Newcastle United but I would feel pretty confident that he is the most popular amongst fans.

Whilst the sympathy angle for his battle against cancer is obviously also there, I do believe that the goodwill towards him goes far further than that.

He regularly expresses his passion for the club by a number of means, including his social media accounts, and hasn’t been afraid to speak up about the poor way he was treated by both Alan Pardew and Mike Ashley, whereas many others would have stayed quiet in the hope of getting an extended contract.

When it comes to trust and being genuine in the fans’ eyes, I think Gutierrez clearly leaves the rest standing.

More than anything though, the positivity of Jonas shines through and maybe it is just a shame that our other player from Argentina has got the Captain’s armband.

With the club seemingly facing the relegation fight like a rabbit dazzled by headlights, Jonas Gutierrez has shown the way with rallying calls to the fans.

In advance of the West Brom he sent the following out on Twitter:

“Thanks for the support during all the season and specially today Newcastle fans, proud to wear the black and white shirt. We still fighting.”

Whilst earlier today Jonas went into ‘Spiderman’ mode to fight the evil of relegation.

Creativity and inspiration are in short supply in this Newcastle team, so true grit will be needed to body swerve relegation this time around.

I just hope his teammates are up to matching Jonas’ superhero credentials.
