Wayne Rooney has named this former Newcastle player as the best and most exciting English player he has ever seen.

The Manchester United and England player made his comments in advance of the release of a new documentary about the life of Paul Gascoigne, a player Rooney describes as ‘the greatest’..

Wayne Rooney had the following to say about Gazza:

“He was always someone that  I looked up to, I still think to this day he is the greatest.

“You don’t shed tears on the football pitch if you don’t care about playing for your country.

“I would say that he is the most exciting English player I have seen and certainly the best.”

As has been well documented, Paul Gascoigne has experienced some ups and very low downs in recent years.

Hopefully he can use this new documentary as a starting point to kick on again and live a life that isn’t always on the edge.

***Wayne Rooney would have been four years old when Gazza took part in that once in a lifetime World Cup sem-final against Germany, the iconic image of Paul Gascoigne’s tears during that game summing up how close England got to lifting the trophy.
