Sunderland say Adam Johnson up for selection despite child sex charges
Surprising news down the road this morning, with Adam Johnson remaining available for team selection by Sunderland despite being charged with child sex offences.
The 27 year old was yesterday charged by Durham Police after answering bail at Peterlee Police Station.
Some eyebrows were raised when Adam Johnson was brought back into the squad despite being under investigation, the player making substitute appearances against West Ham, Newcastle and Palace.
However, it surely puts both the player and his teammates in a difficult position now that the situation has escalated with Johnson actually being charged.
Obviously innocent until proven guilty but it will be a difficult arena to play football in when it comes to the reality of the situation.
The Sunderland club statement released on Friday morning read:
‘Following yesterday’s statement from Durham Constabulary, the club recognises that the formal legal process must take its course and whilst our position remains unchanged, we will keep the matter under review.
The club will not be making any further comment.’
