This morning has brought claims from sources/sauces close to Mike Ashley, that he is now planning an NUFC u-turn on the policy of not trying in the FA and League Cups.

Coincidentally appearing on the very day that fans have organised a boycott of the Spurs match, the fact that these claims are being carried across many different media, points to it being a story fed from the club’s cynical PR offensive to try and counter the fan unrest.

These claims of actually trying in the cups have followed other seemingly planted stories in the press, claiming large sums will be spent in the summer on the Newcastle squad, along with named players such as QPR’s Charlie Austin allegedly being lined up.

The very fact that a football club has to push out a message claiming that it is now going to actually try in cup competitions, tells you everything.

If you recall, at one of the NUFC fans forums the club actually prepared some statistics (that had more holes in them than…) to justify not trying in the cups.

Attempting to show just how dangerous it would be in terms of possible relegation, if they actually did put out a team that tried to win cup matches.
