Newcastle target Jordan Rhodes transfer

Newcastle United are targeting Jordan Rhodes for a summer transfer and have been watching him in recent matches.

On Tuesday night, the striker scored his 18th league goal of the season as Blackburn drew 2-2 at Birmingham, with Football League World reporting that Newcastle had scouts in the stand watching this latest appearance.

Newcastle are desperate for at least one, preferably two, new striker(s) with a proven goalscoring record and Rhodes has certainly got that.

The 25 year old has scored 18 in 37 Championship starts this season, making it 69 in 124 league starts since moving as a 22 year old for £8m from Huddersfield.

Hull had a £12m bid turned down last summer and whilst Jordan Rhodes’ goals may have been scored in the second tier, Newcastle have to find goals from somewhere and they won’t come cheap.

Disastrous signings like the woeful budget signing Emmanuel Riviere, expecting a journeyman French striker with no decent goals record to step up to the Premier League, just can’t be repeated.

United have got really lucky with Papiss Cisse’s remarkable goals per minutes played record this season and the fact that (one for the future!) Ayoze Perez chipped in with a handful of crucial goals.

Potentially having to pay something like £15m or more for a Championship striker is reality these days, what Mike Ashley will make of that is open to question.
