Having sat out Saturday’s draw with Turkey, all Newcastle eyes were on Daryl Janmaat and Tim Krul as Holland played Spain on Tuesday night.
Krul once again spent the night on the bench but Daryl Janmaat was selected for his first start since Guus Hiddink dropped him last Autumn after gifting the Czech Republic a winner.
Great news for Newcastle as the full-back played the whole match as Holland followed up their 5-1 trouncing of Spain in Brazil last summer, with a very comfortable 2-0 friendly success in Amsterdam last night.
This followed Moussa Sissoko playing over 70 minutes in France’s 3-1 defeat by Brazil last Thursday but the Newcastle midfielder was left on the bench as the French overcame the Danes 2-0 on Sunday.
With only short flights home for the three players on internaional duty, they should be quickly back into training ahead of the derby match.
United (and Sunderland) also gaining the benefit of an extra day’s preparation with the game moved for TV.
Krul, Janmaat and Sissoko are all key first team players and much will rest on how they perform in Sunday’s match
