Alan Kennedy was a dashing exciting young full-back for Newcastle in the early 70s before he then went on to become a multiple European Cup winner with Liverpool.
Not sure where his Texaco Cup win with Newcastle will rank alongside the League Title wins and European Cup glory.
However, as a pundit maybe it wasn’t a good idea to let Alan Kennedy near the cooking sherry before he reviewed Liverpool v Newcastle tonight.
The sixty year old was interviewed on the official Liverpool website and has clearly been watching a different Newcastle United to me in the last however many years.
According to Kennedy, the match at Anfield is ‘always a classic’ and ‘Newcastle always try to entertain’…
“It’s always a classic, it always dreams up the Kevin Keegan era, when there were 4-3s and everybody was scoring goals.
“Newcastle always try to entertain and I believe there’ll be plenty of goals in the game.”
Well with 16 defeats and 3 draws in the last 19 Premier League matches between the two clubs at Anfield, not sure how many ‘classics’ Newcastle have enjoyed since the last league win in 1994…in fact Alan Kennedy was still involved in a playing capacity in 1994 when on Barrow’s books!
In the Premier League there have been 130 goals shared between the two clubs but the only problem is that the scousers have had a slightly unfair share of them (stats HERE).
I have seen Newcastle entertain on many occasions since Alan Kennedy hung up his boots but not too many times recently.
Defending with everybody behind the ball against a Sunderland team, who are arguably the worst in the division, takes some beating.
The Mackems easily beating Newcastle in between 4-0 and 4-1 defeats at home to Villa and Palace.
A Sunderland team with only 3 wins in their last 22 Premier League matches and 2 of those were against Newcastle!
So let’s pass the cooking sherry around and all lookd forward to the ‘Return of the Entertainers’ tonight!
