Defender Chancel Mbemba has been linked with a move to Newcastle United in the summer.
The Congolese international plays for Anderlecht who are chasing the Belgian league title, currently one point behind Club Brugge.
At the weekend The Sun stated that Newcastle’s Chief Scout had personally been to Belgium to watch the player, with Mbemba expected to be looking to move at the end of the season.
In the past there has been much speculation about ex-Newcastle players Obafemi Martins and Lomana LuaLua, with claims that what the dates say on their certificates might not match reality.
In the case of Chancel Mbemba though, he could be an even more extreme story.
In a probe into certain player ages, FIFA looked into the case of the defender from Congo.
Back in 2013 CNN revealed:
‘Mbemba was registered by his two first Congolese clubs as being born in 1988, according to documents obtained by CNN. Yet for a Cup of Nations qualifier in June 2011, his year of birth was listed as November 30, 1991.
Meanwhile, the birth date recorded by his Belgian club Anderlecht is August 8, 1994.
Just to complicate matters, Mbemba himself, thinks he was born in 1990.’
If Newcastle do end up signing Chancel Mbemba in the summer, let’s hope he isn’t as temperamental as Yaya Toure is when it comes to people remembering his birthday(s)….
