Newcastle miss out on French striker transfer – Reports
According to the French media, Newcastle United have missed on long-term French striker target, Andre-Pierre Gignac.
The soon to be out of contract French international had already indicated he would be moving abroad this summer and La Provence say that Dynamo Moscow have won the race for his signature.
Newcastle have been repeatedly linked with the player and the idea of no transfer fee said to have caught Mike Ashley’s eye.
However, with any number of clubs showing an interest including Inter Milan, AC Milan, Galatasaray, and Olympiakos, Newcastle winning any kind of a wages auction was never going to be likely.
At 29 Gignac would have been outside Mike Ashley’s comfort zone in terms of age, but with United so desperate for a proven goalscorer to be added, something has to give somewhere.
The Marseille striker has already scored 18 goals this campaign and that brings him up to 58 goals in the last three seasons.
However, Russia is said to be Gignac’s destination and one of the key factors (as well as wages) is reported to be the fact that the forward’s former Marseille teammate Mathieu Valbuena has settled so well after making the move to Moscow last summer.
