The latest Newcastle injury to hit the squad sees Mehdi Abeid out until April.

John Carver says the Algerian midfielder has picked up a thigh injury and will miss at least two to three weeks.

In Cheick Tiote’s absence and Jack Colback’s suspension, Abeid started both the Villa and Manchester United matches, his first back in the starting eleven since the draw at Burnley at the beginning of December.

Whether Abeid would have kept his place with Colback available tomorrow is debatable, but certainly this latest blow doesn’t help a Newcastle United with a small squad and many existing injuries.

The midfielder will definitely miss the Everton game and the Arsenal game on the following weekend.

However, there is then a two week break for international matches before Newcastle have the small matter of another derby match on Wearside to prepare for.

“Mehdi Abeid is out with a thigh injury and that is two to three weeks.

“It is another headache and it was unexpected.”

“It is at a time where he saw this as an opportunity to get back in the team after he broke his toe on international duty, he must have seen it as an opportunity.”

“It is a blow, another blow, but you have just got to get on with it.”
