Daryl Janmaat and Leighton Baines are battling it out to be the Premier League defender who contributes the most assists this season.

The Everton left-back is currently on eight but is struggling to make Sunday’s match.

With six assists Daryl Janmaat is clear in second place, two ahead of a posse of defenders who have created four goals so far this campaign.

When you look at it more closely though, Janmaat maybe already deserves the most credit even if he doesn’t beat Baines’ total.

Five of Leighton Baines’ eight assists have come as a result of set-pieces which the Everton defender regularly takes. Where as as far as I can recall, all of Janmaat’s have come in open play.

With Newcastle so desperate in the corner/free-kick department, maybe it might be an idea to give the job to somebody who has already proved he is far and away the best at delivering the ball into the box in open play.

Along with Andy Hinchcliffe, Baines holds the record for most assists in a season by a defender in the Premier League era.

Hinchcliffe managed 11 in one season in the nineties, whilst Baines matched him in 2010/11.
