When appearing at his pre-Manchester United press conference, John Carver made some surprising comments about Papiss Cisse and his ‘troublesome’ knee.

Like Alan Pardew before him, John Carver has repeatedly said that Newcastle’s only credible striker (Ayoze Perez is more attacking midfielder/second striker) has had to be used sparingly this season because of his knee that was operated on last year.

However, when asked about Papiss Cisse’s knee problem, John Carver rounded on the assembled Journalists and said this:

“Everybody  is making a big thing about Papiss Cisse and his knee.

“What I will say is that his physical stats from Saturday’s game, were the best they have been for a long long time.”

Then added:

“So not just did he give us the goal which was very important, but his workrate off the ball was the highest it’s been for a long long time.

“So that tells me he doesn’t really have any issues with his knee.”

This then gets even more bizarre because if you go to the previous day’s (Monday’s) Chronicle, then John Carver was saying something completely different.

The Chronicle on Monday – What John Carver told them when asked about Cisse’s knee:

“What do you think? We are having to manage him to deal with his situation.”

“We will see what he is like in the next few days.”

Dancing to Mike Ashley’s tune is a tricky one as Alan Pardew found out, often contradicting himself from one week or one day to the next, but obviously our Head Coach is quickly finding out that handling what goes out in the press is an art in itself.

As for what the reality is, you pay your money and take your pick.
