According to Arsene Wenger, Arsenal had to show ‘different qualities’ to overcome Newcastle United at St. James’ Park on Saturday afternoon.
The Gunners’ boss praised Newcastle for a change and said the home side were very good in the second period – with arguably Newcastle so dominant after half-time that they deserved at least a point.
“We have played four games in two weeks – three away games at Manchester, in Monaco and then here today, we have won all the three.
“The last 40 minutes were difficult because our legs had gone a little bit and Newcastle played very well in the second-half.
“We had an outstanding first half going forward and a very fluent game by creating chance after chance, in the second half though we had just to show different qualities and hang on.”
Wenger has often praised the United fans but not very often has he said anything positive about the team, however he knew that both he and his team had been in a game after Newcastle belatedly woke up after a lacklustre first half.
The Arsenal players showing battling qualities, although the number of times the visiting players stayed on the ground after challenges did become a bit embarrassing.
Judging by the photo at the top of the page, it wasn’t just the players who were tired in that second-half, Arsene Wenger slumped in his seat as his players just held on in the closing stages.
