Mike Ashley has fought back in the battle for who controls Rangers.

The Newcastle United owner has now placed a second representative on the board of the Glasgow club, with Sports Direct’s Head of Brands Barry Leach, now appointed as the finance director at Rangers.

rangersWhen Mike Ashley made the secured loan of £2m late last year, one of the conditions was that he would have two places on the board, Derek Llambias already in place as Rangers Chief Executive.

Little doubt it is no coincidence that this news comes immediately after it was revealed yesterday that Robert Sarver, owner of Phoenix Suns basketball team, has made an offer for a controlling interest in the club, or to buy all other shareholders as well.

Mike Ashley and Rangers also face an SFA disciplinary hearing on January 27 regarding the Newcastle United owner’s dual control/ownership of Rangers and NUFC.

By placing Leach on the Rangers board it suggest s that Ashley won’t go down without a fight in terms of who holds sway at the Glasgow club, as to what impact this will have on his stay at Newcastle United it remains to be seen.
