Shola outdoes Shearer but Emre eventual hero v Sunderland – Video Special
It is nine years ago today, Shola Ameobi outdid Alan Shearer but Emre emerged the eventual hero against Sunderland.
Graeme Souness had only months earlier helped Freddy Shepherd waste a phenomenal amount of money on Albert Luque and Michael Owen, while he was unknowingly only months away from the sack.
The return match on Wearside would prove Alan Shearer’s last stand with a goal in that 4-1 very funny match, but this was Shola Ameobi’s day, with the final touch from our Turkish maestro.
In a mad seven minutes just before half-time, Shola twice gave Newcastle the lead only for the mackems to twice quickly equalise.
Souness had also brought in Emre who was pretty much absymal (or ‘disappointing’ of you want to be generous) for most of his stay at St.James’ Park.
However, this was his day and enjoy again his beautifully taken free-kick that won the day against Sunderland.
