Massive Lift To See Newcastle Players Leaving

Looking at Newcastle’s jostling in the transfer market so far, I can only say good vibes all round.

Apart from a cheap and cheerful punt on free agent Romain Amalfitano we haven’t actually signed anybody but the players linked with Newcastle, and those heading out, fill me with hope.

On the one hand there seems to be definite substance in approaches for French (Debuchy) and Dutch (Anita and De Jong) internationals, while the likes of Smith, Guthrie and now Best, are being moved out.

You sometimes have to look at the whole picture and I think it’s great to see average players like Guthrie and Best heading off when it wouldn’t have been a massive surprise to see United take the short-term, cheap and not so cheerful, route of keeping them to fill a couple of shirts.

So while the profile of targets such as Debuchy and De Jong excite me that the club are looking to push on, it similarly encourages me that they don’t see Best or Guthrie as good enough even to be squad players.

Thankfully Alan Smith was never going to be hanging around for a day longer than we had to keep him, while with Fraser Forster I’m a bit disappointed this local lad hasn’t managed to come through here but I respect the likes of Alan Pardew’s judgement if he’s willing to let him go.

When I say I’m happy to see players go it isn’t owt personal, just recognition that as your aspirations grow, so the level of ability has to increase in your squad.

For example Leon Best, who has just finalised a move to Blackburn, has scored 10 goals in 46 Newcastle appearances, a similar story to his overall career record of 52 in 219 matches, most of which were in the lower divisions.

Best isn’t a Premier League class goalscorer and to think anything else is just fooling yourself, luckily Alan Pardew thinks along the same lines.
