In terms of credibility and prestige I don’t think Newcastle United could have landed a better sponsor than Virgin, particularly when there are any opportunities for their much admired and very likeable owner to help spread the black & white word.
Rather than pretending to be a lifelong football fan like so many others, he’s happy to admit that football isn’t one of his greatest passions but what is more important is that he approaches with real passion anything he gets involved in and comes over as a really genuine bloke.
Writing on his blog, Sir Richard has waxed lyrical about Newcastle’s season just gone:
“Congratulations to Newcastle United for such a brilliant season.
It is a privilege to sponsor the club with Virgin Money, and it’s great to see the team bring so much joy to the fans in the north east of England and around the world.
I got the chance to meet some of the players when we launched Virgin Money in Newcastle earlier this year, and I think it’s fair to say our name on the shirts has been something of a lucky charm!
Well done to the manager Alan Pardew and everyone at Newcastle United for making it into Europe – roll on next season”.
Any opportunity to get Richard Branson more involved at Newcastle United should be grabbed with both hands.
