At this time of year scepticism rules when it comes to Newcastle United being linked with any player.

One name that has been put in the frame is Sebastian Bassong, not hard to make the connection as we are short of centre-backs and he is one who isn’t getting his game at the moment.

Whether there is any truth in this rumour is another matter but when a player has already been on the St.James’ Park books it gives it an extra dimension.

Peter Beardsley is the stand-out example of a player returning and arguably being even better than the first time around! However, Peter Beardsley was no ordinary player and I wouldn’t judge anybody else alongside him.

In the case of Bassong I thought he was outstanding for Newcastle in the relegation season and one of a small group of players who almost made up for the inadequacies of so many others.

The club were more than happy to pull in around £8m for a player who’d cost a pittance and after he left I thought he got a pretty raw deal off some supporters, in light of him being one of the few players who could hold his head up high after that disastrous season.

Bassong could be a real asset if he got off to a decent start on a potential return to Newcastle United, if the fans gave him the chance.
