I’m always very suspicious of people claiming to support a team, especially when it is Newcastle United, but who don’t also despise their biggest rivals.

That is of course unless you are a hundred years old and come from that halcyon (mythical?) era where people went to Newcastle one week and sunderland the next, liking both teams equally.

Surely hating your rivals is as much a part of being a football fan as supporting your own team is.

A friend of mine was puzzled when asked by somebody who his second team was, like many of us he only has room in his head/heart for Newcastle United. After much deliberation he said that it must be sunderland as their result was the first one he looked for after Newcastle.

I would actually say that within thirty seconds of watching a Premier League match on any particular I could tell you who I wanted to win.

The reality of course is who I wanted to lose the most but it’s the same thing really.

Are things so ‘Black and White’ for all of you?
