The contract for Jonas was a bolt out of the blue as expectations were that as the end of his contract loomed, he would be sold off as the club’s seemingly rigid wage structure would disallow an acceptable offer.
Sign though he did and even though Gutierrez isn’t one of the very top earners it was still an eye-opener when he put pen to paper.
Have the club changed position or has Jonas compromised…maybe a bit of both. The real test could be with Coloccini who has proved to be a very good player, whether his performances are worth a reported £10m fee and £90k a week wages might be another matter.
Colo has a year left on his contract come May and if Mike Ashley gets him to sign on the dotted line I think we will really know that times might really be changing at St.James’ Park.
