Issue 137 – September 2000

Shay Given is by some distance the best goalkeeper I have seen play for Newcastle United. We all hope Tim Krul will take us to new heights but Given is the reigning champion in terms of what he did for the club and Krul’s challenge is to improve on the Irishman’s magnificent ten years.

The 2000/01 season was a strange one, it was (later to be Sir) Bobby Robson’s first full season and on the pitch it was to prove a disappointment overall.

We caught up with the always amenable Shay Given early in the season, ten points out of the first six matches and Given seemingly to have established himself ahead of Steve Harper in the number one shirt.

Read on and get Shay’s take on Sir Bobby and Newcastle United, as it was then.
